Tenacious. Determined. The Little General we used to call her. Emily has a will of iron and a head that could crack concrete. But she's always got a smile while determinedly pursuing what she wants. And she won't fight you for it. She's more of the passive agressive antagonist. She gets you talking and laughing about something entirely different, and before you know it - you've agreed to the thing you denied her 10 minutes ago. Her older sister, Trina, has learned to just give in right away. Her father and I are still holding out, trying to be the teaching, training parents that illustrate she can't live this way all her life. Can she? Maybe she can. You see, for Emily, hope springs eternal. There's always a way around the obstacle before her. I read a Scripture the other day that reminded me God also sees a way around any obstacle...
2 Sam. 14:14 says, "Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him."
In God's economy, there's really only one circumstance in which forgiveness is no longer possible - death. Then, it's too late - no second chances, no mulligans, no go-backs, no do-overs. But until you're pushing up daisies, God is working to make a way around any obstacle that comes between you and Him! 2 Sam. 14:14 says, "...He devises ways..." so we don't have to be estranged from Him! Now, when God puts His mind to something, I'm thinking He can be pretty creative!
If our flawed Little General, Emily, can maneuver her way around most of life's obstacles, certainly our perfect Heavenly Father can ALWAYS make the way clear when something comes between us. Whether sin has separated us or busyness or simply our own fleshly desires, if you are still breathing, you still have the opportunity to draw near to God. There is always a way.
