My Eternal Life's Love

Glittering stars, a brilliant moon and a frigid breeze blowing off of a northern Indiana lake. O how I longed for my husband's embrace. Though sequestered for a solitary weekend with Jesus, I still longed for my husband's sweet presence.

Suddenly, a memory came unbidden: the two of us snorkeling in the teal blue Caribbean. But a violent storm interrupted those tranquil waters, and frantic guides screamed for the divers to get back to the boat. We couldn’t hear their words. We could hear only their panicked screams and see only their wild gestures. I swam to safety, but my husband wasn't there. Once aboard I discovered that the anchor had broken away in the heavy winds and the boat was drifting away from the remaining divers. When I finally spotted my dear husband swimming toward the boat, relief flooded my heart. But when I went to him, he grabbed my shoulders.

Terrified and breathless, he cried, “I thought there were sharks out there, and I couldn't find you!”

The fear in his eyes melted my heart, and I realized – he had remained in the water intentionally, searching for me.

Now, in the frigid winds of my weekend alone, the realization washed over me anew. I whispered to my Savior, "My husband would have given his life for me, Jesus."

A still small voice answered, "I did give My life for you, beloved."

For the first time I understood - and truly felt - the depth of Christ's love for me.

Is it hard for you to love an invisible God? Is it hard to believe the God of all Creation loves you? Have you ever loved someone so much it hurts - a spouse, a child, an aging parent or friend? How do we reconcile those feelings with Christ's command to love Him first and most? I've struggled with these concepts all my life. But in the moment of God's gentle whisper, at a frosty, lonely retreat in Northern Indiana, God made it clear: My love for those around me isn't a stumbling block to my love for Christ; it is the bridge.
